15 Bikers in Malaysia Fined for Convoy Joyride During Lockdown

Automologist ATHERTON thinks there are better things to be done during the lockdown.

Most of us here in Malaysia adhere to the government’s MCO (Movement Control Order) rules. However, from time to time, we hear of certain individuals or groups who break them at the risk of public safety. Recently, a group of 15 bikers were caught and fined RM5,000 each for going on a joyride.

The riders, aged between 18 to 41, were on their high-powered motorcycles when police got a tip-off and sprang to nab them along the popular Jalan Semenyih-Kuala Klawang route. Dressed in their best (full leather gear, that is), the riders were zooming in and out of twisties when a team of policemen from the Kajang traffic division, who had set up a mobile roadblock, apprehended all 15 of them at about 10.25am.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zaid Hassan said the riders had all breached the MCO rules by taking part in the convoy. They were compounded under Section 16 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures Within Local Areas of Infection) Regulations 2021.

Police roadblocks surprise motorists at corners to nab those flaunting the rules.

We all want to get this pandemic over with and get out and back to our normal lives. And we all know, too, that each one of us is responsible for bringing the number of Covid-19 related cases down. But if we flaunt the lockdown rules and whatnot, it will take a long long time for that to happen.

So, even if you are bored at home or angry to the bone with yet another MCO and cannot see an end to this cycle, or even if you have extra cash to burn and pay for compounds, just think about others who are less fortunate and are struggling to make ends meet because of this pandemic. That RM5,000 fine could do a lot in getting groceries for your neighbours in your neighbourhood. It will do a lot more good for your soul too.

Let’s just follow the rules and beat this pandemic sooner rather than later.
