Mechanic Reveals How Much It Cost To Fix A Transmission in a Toyota EV

Mechanic krisbuchowicz based out of Miami has revealed how much it costs to fix a Toyota EV and the number is shocking.
We’ve reported previously about the Hyundia Ioniq battery replacement that cost more than a car. But this time, we’re tackling a simpler and equally fundamental part of all cars.
Many EV evangelists will tell you that there are no maintenance costs for an EV, but like an iPhone, when one part fails, you don’t replace just one thing, you need to replace the whole part, and that’s what this Toyota EV, the bZ4X is facing.

In the video the mechanic reveals that the transmission assembly of the car is faulty, the trans-axle assembly, in particular.
In an ICE vehicle, the issue can be addressed separately, but in an EV, the transmission has to be replaced as a whole for a whopping USD16,000 plus labour, or RM68,000 today.
Yes, transmissions fail constantly on ICE vehicles too and they’re expensive, but that half the price of the car. In his caption on Instagram he wrote:
“Even though electric vehicles ditch the gears and fluids of traditional drivetrains, replacing a drive unit like this one can run $10,000+ real quick. And unlike gas cars, there’s no rebuilding it—you replace the whole unit.”
Now imagine something like the air conditioning breaking down, or the windows. Once everything is electronic, who knows what else will have to be replaced together in the future.
